COMIC BOOKS
INTRODUCTION
As part of my final dissertation at Sheffield Hallam University, I created two comic books titled "Gold: The Poo of Golmer" and "Gilded Shadows: Unearthing the Price of Gold." These comic books were not just creative works but also served as a powerful medium to highlight the environmental and human impacts of gold mining. The project allowed me to blend my design skills with storytelling to address pressing global issues, making complex subjects more accessible to a broader audience through visual art and narrative.
CONCEPT & PURPOSE
The primary goal of these comic books was to explore and expose the often-overlooked consequences of gold mining, focusing on how this industry affects both nature and human lives. Gold, while considered a symbol of wealth and prosperity, often has a hidden cost associated with its extraction. My aim was to raise awareness of these costs, particularly the environmental degradation, displacement of communities, and health hazards faced by people involved in or affected by gold mining.
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
To create these comic books, I conducted extensive research on the gold mining industry, including its environmental impact and its social and economic effects on communities in various parts of the world. I looked into case studies from countries like Brazil, South Africa, and Papua New Guinea, where gold mining has had severe consequences for both people and the environment. I also studied sustainability reports and environmental assessments from international organizations that track the mining industry's impact.
1. GOLD: THE POO OF GOLMER
"Gold: The Poo of Golmer" is a comic book set in a mythical forest, where a powerful dragon named Golmer, a symbol of gold mining, leads to environmental devastation. The story follows the heroic hero Euno, who uses his powers to defeat Golmer and restore harmony to the forest. Euno transforms Jewel and Bullioner into nurses and mechanics, symbolizing the positive impact of gold on society. The story emphasizes the importance of sustainable and ethical use of resources, as gold can contribute to progress and well-being. The comic book uses a combination of fantasy elements and real-world concerns to challenge readers to consider the negative impact of human greed on the planet and the need for a better way forward. The comic serves as both an entertaining story and a moral fable, encouraging readers to rethink their relationship with nature and the resources it provides.
2. GILDED SHADOWS: UNEARTHING THE PRICE OF GOLD
"Gilded Shadows: Unearthing the Price of Gold" is the comic book that I ultimately selected for my final project, and it became a culmination of my creative journey in storytelling, art, and advocacy. The book is a powerful allegory for the environmental and human toll of gold mining, illustrated through an engaging narrative filled with magic, adventure, and a profound message about cooperation and the consequences of greed.
This is not just a fantasy story but a moral fable that encourages readers to reflect on the real-world impacts of gold mining and the broader issues of environmental degradation. It delivers a powerful message about the consequences of unchecked greed and the need for collective action in restoring balance to the earth.
The comic book highlights the importance of sustainability, cooperation, and the responsible use of resources, reminding us that the consequences of our actions will eventually catch up with us, but through unity and innovation, we can create a better future. This project allowed me to use storytelling to explore important social and environmental issues, while also pushing my artistic and design skills to new heights, making it a truly rewarding and impactful endeavor.
PLOT OVERVIEW
"Gilded Shadows: Unearthing the Price of Gold" is a magical and peaceful forest story about two fairies, Euno and Dimitra, who live harmoniously with other creatures. However, two greedy mages, Bullion and Jewel, arrive with dark intentions, representing human greed and obsession with gold. They summon Golmers, evil creatures, who ravage the forest, causing environmental devastation. Euno and Dimitra seek help from the human world, but humans refuse to help. As the consequences of mining spread beyond the forest, humans realize their mistake and apologize to the fairies. They agree to help Euno and Dimitra in their battle against the mages. The mythical weapon, created by the alliance between humans and fairies, symbolizes the power of collaboration and innovation in addressing environmental crises. The story delves into themes of environmentalism, greed, responsibility, and redemption, with the fairies representing nature's caretakers and Bullion and Jewel representing the destructive forces of materialism and wealth accumulation.
COMBINING STORYTELLING & DESIGN
Creating these comic books allowed me to apply my design skills in a way that combined visual storytelling with social commentary. I used a range of techniques, including hand-drawn illustrations and digital tools, to bring the stories to life. Pixton App, Photoshop and Adobe InDesign were instrumental in the final production, helping me refine the artwork and add the finishing touches to the characters, environments, and overall aesthetic of the comics.
IMPACT & REFLECTION
Through these comic books, I sought to address a complex and often ignored global issue in a way that was accessible, engaging, and thought-provoking. By using comics as the medium, I was able to connect with a wider audience, including younger readers and individuals who might not otherwise engage with topics like environmental justice or ethical mining practices. The comics offered a fresh perspective on the ethical dilemmas surrounding the pursuit of gold and the need for more sustainable practices in the industry.
Both comic books received positive feedback from my professors and peers for their unique approach to addressing global issues and their blend of art and advocacy. They showcased my ability to use design as a tool for communication, not just for products, but for raising awareness and inspiring change. The project allowed me to merge my passion for design with a cause I deeply care about, demonstrating how creative work can contribute to discussions about sustainability, environmental preservation, and social responsibility.
