Project Overview
This project involves design and development of an 8-metre-tall, scissors-inspired stage structure engineered for live performance use. The installation supported direct performer interaction, enabling safe internal climbing and elevated performance during shows. The project balanced visual impact with structural integrity, manufacturability, and repeatable real-world use.
Final built structure used in live performance.
Design Requirements & Constraints
Approx. 8 m overall height.
Support dynamic human loads with safety margin.
Integrated internal climbing access.
Stable elevated performance position.
Segmented fabrication and on-site assembly.
Preserve recognisable large-scale scissors form.
CAD & Structural Development
Modelled in Fusion 360 as a hollow structure with internal reinforcement designed to manage load paths from climbing and performer movement. High-stress regions were strengthened through additional internal support. AutoCAD supported detailing, layout planning, and fabrication coordination, ensuring buildable translation from digital model to full-scale installation.
CAD models showing internal geometry and load-bearing design.
Manufacturing & Assembly
The structure was designed for segmented fabrication to accommodate transport and installation constraints. Joint locations and component sizing were planned to maintain structural continuity once assembled, aligning CAD intent closely with fabrication execution.
Segmented components being loaded - planned for transport and assembly.
Outcome
The completed structure was fabricated and successfully used during live performances on the Scissor Sisters UK tour. Performer interaction validated structural integrity and human-access design considerations under real conditions. The project demonstrates delivery of a safety-critical, large-scale installation from CAD development through deployment.
